Toronto, ON - Dark Slope Studios and No Equal Entertainment acquire screen rights to Douglas Coupland’s Generation X for a premium television series.

First published in 1991, Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture became a defining work of contemporary literature, giving a voice to a generation navigating uncertainty, identity, and the changing nature of work and culture. The novel has sold millions of copies worldwide, been translated into more than 35 languages, and remains one of the most influential books of the modern era.
"Generation X continues to resonate because the questions it asks about identity, ambition, and belonging are as relevant today as they were three decades ago. Douglas Coupland created a story that helped define a generation, and we're excited to reimagine it for a new audience alongside J.B. Sugar and our partners at No Equal Entertainment." Dan Fill, President, Dark Slope Studios.
“In three and a half decades Gen X has become something eternal, and this still surprises me. I do think J.B. and team Dark Slope can create a project that is equally as timeless." Douglas Coupland, Author, Generation X.
The acquisition of Generation X forms part of Dark Slope Studios' broader strategy to invest in and develop premium scripted film and television projects that can reach global audiences. Over the past year, the company has expanded its investment in original content, including the global phenomenon Heated Rivalry and Paramount+'s Hate the Player, starring Shamier Anderson.
Building on that momentum, Dark Slope and No Equal Entertainment previously announced a multi-project development partnership which includes the drama series Waking Wonderland created by Emmy-Winning showrunner Matt Hastings & Tina Hastings and Snakes & Lattes, a half-hour comedy series created by actresses turned writers Kat Barrell and Natalie Lisinska.
The collaboration is further strengthened by No Equal principal J.B. Sugar's longstanding creative relationship with Douglas Coupland, having previously produced, directed, and written episodes of the television adaptation of jPod. Alongside Generation X, the companies are also co-developing a feature film adaptation of Coupland's acclaimed novel The Gum Thief with J.B. Sugar attached to direct.
"Having previously collaborated with Douglas Coupland on JPod and developing a feature adaptation of The Gum Thief, I'm a lifelong admirer of his singular voice, cultural observations, and ability to create unforgettable, character-driven stories. Our partnership with Dark Slope is built around championing visionary creators and developing bold, globally resonant projects, and I'm especially thrilled by the rare opportunity to reimagine the internationally celebrated and culturally influential Generation X." J.B. Sugar, Producer/Director, No Equal Entertainment.
